Over the next six weeks Brighton & Hove City Council will be consulting on our Post-16 Transport Policy for 2023-24.
According to National Guidance on Post 16 transport and travel support to education and training there is no legal requirement to provide free or subsidised travel support to young people of sixth form age, including those with special educational needs and or disabilities. However, the council does provide free travel support to this age group in some circumstances. By law, the council must provide free travel assistance to adult learners, 19+, with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) where the council feels travel is necessary to support education and training for adult learners.
The Post-16 Transport Policy for 2023-24 sets out the travel support and schemes that are available from the council, schools, colleges and transport providers. This travel support is for students aged 16 and over or those aged 19 and over who have an EHCP.
Sixth formers are those defined as all 16–19-year-old learners including 19–25-year-old learners with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who started the course before their 19th birthday (sixth form learners).
